The wreck of the Ariete

It was here, in Ardeleiro, that it happened.

On 25 February 1966, winds were blowing at 150 km/h and the waves were up to 12 metres high. The frigate "Ariete" had left Ferrol the previous day and, already next to Fisterra, in the middle of a storm, it did not take long to suffer damage that left the ship almost without steering and with electrical faults that made it difficult to use the radio.

It was unable to weather the storm: the ship was dragged to near the Cíes Islands and, after the wind turned, it fell back more than 30 nautical miles (about 66 km).

On the morning of the 25th, the first to respond to the distress message was the tanker "Camporraso", which was unable to do anything and even lost one of its crew members in an attempt to throw a line. Soon the frigate "Legazpi" arrived, which also failed in its attempts to hook the Ariete in order to tow it. At the end of the afternoon, the Ariete, pushed by the sea, ran aground in Ardeleiro.

Neighbours from Lira, Carnota and Muros, experienced in fighting storms, immediately went to the beach and managed to throw a line to the Ariete, managing, with their efforts, to save the entire crew.
