Prestige: tragedy and solidarity

13 November 2002. The tanker Prestige sinks in the Atlantic off the coast of Galicia. The spill of the crude oil it was carrying causes an oil slick that affects 2,000 km of coastline on the Iberian Peninsula and as far as France; one of the biggest environmental disasters in the history of Europe.

Carnota is at the epicentre, in the most affected area. Beaches and cliffs were covered with that tar that threatened the lives of numerous species, being very frequent the images of birds with all their bodies covered with that black paste.

The volunteers

On the positive side, the international reaction of solidarity was also extraordinary. Floods of volunteers came to Gaicia to help with the beach clean-up. In Carnota we remember those who came from Castilla y León, who worked on our beaches (such as Susiños, Carnota or Mar de Lira). Their image, covered with white protective equipment and stained with chapapote, is already part of our history.

The Solidarity Route, which runs along this stretch of coastline, is dedicated to these volunteers.
