Marine Reserve of Os Miñarzos

Anyone of a certain age can see the dangers of overfishing, which are visible in fishmongers' shops. In recent decades, many inshore species have seen their catches decrease and the fish on the market are smaller.

The Fishing Interest Marine Reserve of Os Miñarzos was created as an initiative of the Fishermen's Guild of Lira to carry out a more responsible management of the resources. The objectives are to favour the regeneration of species and to deepen scientific knowledge. It occupies the waters off the beaches of Carnota, Portocubelo, Punta de Os Remedios and the beaches of O Ximprón and Ardeleiro. It includes two integral reserve areas, those identified as the main breeding grounds for fish and crustaceans and in which any extractive activity is prohibited.

The Reserve is also a commitment to shellfishing and artisanal coastal fishing, which uses gear and practices that respect the marine environment. The seasons and methods of capture are regulated for each species, in order to guarantee both environmental and economic balance in the long term.
