Salt factories

There was a time, between the 19th and 20th centuries, when Portocubelo beach and the large sandy areas nearby were bustling with activity. Dozens of boats would arrive laden with sardines to supply the various salting and canning factories located on the beach. It was a time of first industrialisation, of economic impulse for Carnota and, also, of the first labour conflicts in a society that passed from the traditional ways to depend on big industrialists.

Traces of that not so distant era are still preserved. The ruins of this corner remind us that this was the site of the salting plant built by José Beiro, a neighbour of Lira, which later passed into the hands of the Portals family, based in Esteiro and owners of other similar installations. In the 1960s, the businessman Daniel Rodríguez Calvo adapted it for the production of preserves, following the new market demands. Many people in the area still remember working for this factory, known as "Fábrica de Daniel". The three peaks on the façade, corresponding to the roofs, are very common and characteristic of this type of architecture of the sea.
