Aquaculture

One of the great challenges of the present day in the world of fisheries is captive breeding. The growing demand for fish and food in general must be met without increasing pressure on the oceans. In addition to the necessary improvement in the management of food resources, farming must be a solution which is not without environmental risks, in particular because of its energy consumption and the waste it has to deal with.

On the other hand, breeding in captivity is a scientific challenge due to the difficulties of adaptation of the different species. The Carnota aquaculture plant produces turbot (Psetta maxima) and sole (Solea senegalensis). As regards the first species, Galicia is one of the major European producers, with sole being the most recent addition.

Larval rearing is the most complicated phase, so there are specialised companies. During growth, the fish are sorted according to size in land-based tanks, integrated into a seawater pumping circuit, and feeding conditions are adjusted. Both turbot and sole take up to 30 months to reach a size suitable for marketing.
